Amazing outdoor hotel suites, some good references.

AMANGIRI RESORT
Lake Powell, Canyon Point, Utah
This is one of the best places in the United States for star-gazing. The air is clear and dry, and there's very little ambient light. If you'd like less exposure but a more focused relationship with the starry pitch above, six Amangiri suites have —three protecting walls with the open sky above and a pool below you.

LION SANDS PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa
Over the past 60 years, this tree house—built as a photographer's platform —has been reinforced and adorned with a cozy double bed, a hot-water bottle, dressing gowns, and a basin. Guests can have dinner and drinks in the tree or dine at the lodge and head out afterward. Once dropped off —with mosquito repellent, torches, lanterns, and a two-way radio —they're on their own till morning. Chances are that during the night you will hear a lion roaring to stake his claim.

LAS VENTANAS AL PARAÍSO
Los Cabos, Mexico
From the terrace of your penthouse at the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, you have a 180-degree view of the Sea of Cortés. The bed is king-size, the breezes and waves are gentle, and the sounds are ambient—birds at sunset and sunrise. As the penumbra subsumes the whites and blues and greens, the fragrance distilled by the heat of the day rises—the smells of sand and earth, the ozone released by breaking waves, the scent of jasmine. Here's your essential equipment: All suites have telescopes and guides to the constellations
BLUE MOUNTAINS PRIVATE SAFARIS
Blue Mountains National Park, Australia
A swagman is a nomad who sleeps in a swag. But here, the swags are padded, lined with fine cotton, and laid out on decks by the Wollondilly River, 75 miles southwest of Sydney, where the eucalyptus forests yield their oily vapor to the sun, leaving a scent and a blue haze that gives the mountains their name.

L'ALBERETA
Erbusco, Italy
On the hills of Franciacorta, between Brescia and Bergamo, L'Albereta has the Cabriolet Suite. Atop a tower facing Lake Iseo, you are in the clutches of Northern Italian luxury—sitting on satin, grosgrain, damask; surrounded by vineyards. Press a button and the roof above the bed opens to the heavens. During the annual Perseid meteor shower (known here as the tears of San Lorenzo), the suite is particularly sought after.

LOISABA WILDERNESS LODGE
Nanyuki, Kenya
Inspired by a Mukokoteni handcart and built on an old Land Rover axle, each bed is on a large platform set about ten feet off the ground and 100 feet apart, ensuring privacy. In the evening, the Masai and Samburu who run the camps wheel them out from under a palm-thatch roof. The air is clear 300 days a year, granting full access to the wonder of African skies.

ADRÈRE AMELLAL DESERT ECOLODGE
Siwa Oasis, Egypt
Built of mud and salt crystals, sits at the foot of a flat-topped white mountain considered holy by the local people. The lodge uses no power except for the generator that runs the kitchen. Outdoor beds are set up on the roof or out in the desert and are made of palm reeds, with proper quilts and pillows and Egyptian cotton sheets. But if you fall asleep, you'll miss the magic of absolute silence.

KILLA BHAWAN
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
In Jaisalmer, a living fortress high above the surrounding small city of the same name guests might follow local custom and sleep out on the roof, in a well-made colonial bed enjoying the magnified magic isolation in the middle of the Indian desert. Night brings a little wind, a clear desert sky, and the sounds of the city bedding down. Life begins again around six with the bells of the temples and first prayers.

OL DONYO WUAS
Kenya
There's a permanent bower on the roof deck above every suite that can be done up with fresh soft cotton linens, blankets, and hot water bottles. By moonlight, the savanna below is visible, as is Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. When the moon is new, the sky is black and the heavens are so close that satellites and shooting stars seem to careen overhead like fireflies.

TSWALU
Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa

The Malori Deck shown here is a raised deck in the middle of 100,000ha private game reserve in Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa's largest private game reserve. Guests can sleep either under a thatched overhang, should rain look likely, or along the deck which is completely open. The deck is reached by a game vehicle and there's ample space for couples to enjoy their sundowners from the terrace as their chef prepares dinner.

AKA
Central Park, NYC, NY
Located just west of Fifth Avenue, aka Central Park's sprawling penthouse suite includes an outdoor bedroom complete with a queen-size bed and wood-burning fireplace. Popular during New York's sweltering summer, the suite's 1,000 sq ft outdoor terrace provides views of the Steinway building, Fifth Avenue and Central Park.

TIGER BLUE
Indonesia
Private-charter yacht Tiger Blue is a timber Phinisi usually found exploring the waters of Indonesia. The balmy climate and accommodating crew mean guests on board have little to do but relax and enjoy the weather. The bed shown here is ideal for an al fresco slumber, whether during the day or overnight.

GH TREMEZZO
Lago di Como, Italy
The rooftop suites at Grand hotel Tremezzo, on Lake Como, are more adaptable than you might first think. The Jacuzzis can be emptied and have a specially made mattress inserted so as to convert them to outdoor beds.

SABUK LODGE
Nanyuki, Kenya
Lodges at Sabuk, in Kenya, are only partially covered so as to provide guests with exposure to their dramatic surroundings whether they're reading on the terrace or dozing in bed.

NKWICHI LODGE
Lake Malawi, Mozambique
A hand-built lodge by the shores of Lake Niassa in Mozambique, Nkwichi Lodge stands by a 600 sq km game reserve that houses sable, elephant, reedbuck, leopard and more than 300 species of bird. After a day's exploration, guests here can fall asleep in the Nkwichi star bed, afterwards being collected by boat for a bush breakfast by a Baobab tree.

AMANRUYA RESORT
Bodrum, Turkey
Guests in the Terrace Cottage category of room make the most of the night-time heat by sleeping in its pergola.
